Australia Post is the epitome of an "old economy" organization. It has a very large and heavily unionized workforce, thousands of physical locations, and one shareholder-the Australian government. This case explores how Post has been able nevertheless to develop a number of leading-edge electronic businesses. The case describes the strategic and organizational approaches used by Australia Post to gather, examine, approve, and implement ideas for e-business. The structural relationship between the e-commerce unit and the IT department is also explored. The case poses the question of how the organization should move forward both strategically and structurally with respect to e-business.
