IT outsourcing has progressed from headline-grabbing, often contentious deals between clients and vendors to mature, value-adding partnerships between capable vendors and savvy clients. However, one expectation for IT outsourcing continues to disappoint: innovation. As the pace of technology change quickens, companies are racing to incorporate capabilities ranging from mobile support for applications to processing of massive amounts of unstructured data. They find they often rely on newer, smaller, less mature technology partners to deliver those new capabilities. These partners require very different types of relationships from traditional outsourcing. In this briefing, we take an early look at this new breed of outsourcing partnership and suggest how companies can prepare to leverage the opportunities that these new relationships offer.
